This Ain't That

» Drekno 05/19/12 15:19:43  » Real Rap » comments: 2

Drekno Before I start this entry, I want to say that I support all in their artistic endeavors. Now that I got that out of the way, I was on FB this morning and a friend of mine left a comment about how she felt about my music. I know she has heard some of it, but I don't really know how much. It hit me at that point that she knows me personally and has nothing to gain by trying to inflate my already expansive and ever-growing ego, but she is supportive. When I was young in this, my click and one other act(who were are friends) were the only ones in the town with a record deal, and because the investment was so large back then, hardly anybody else was even recording, besides J-One(Jay Bellamy) and Poochie(Bishop Freeze). In comes digital recording, which made it possible for anyone with the desire and a computer to make a "record". I think it's a great thing. I'm almost embarrassed to say what me and my dude D-Wiz paid for a three song demo back in the analog days. Lol. Here's the thing...what happened to fans? I mean, now because it's easy to produce, music, especially hip hop, has become de-valued. So being an artist has almost become a joke. The average person puts all "rappers" in the same category. Don't get me wrong, it's all hip hop, but it's not the same thing. We learn to rhyme as kids, you know, Dr Suess and whatnot, right? So when I say I'm a rap artist, what I mean is I try to elicit some sort of emotion from the listener. I try to give some insight into who I am,how I think, where I've been, and what I've done. I don't just put words together because they rhyme. What I'm saying is, even if you are not a fan of my music, it's ok for you to just be a fan. Just because you CAN get an instrumental and rhyme over it, doesn't mean you SHOULD. Just enjoy the music. I remember back in the day, the gang members used to clown because we did music, now they all got a CD. So when I approach you with my product and you proceed to tell me that you're cousin's wife's sister's boyfriend is a rapper too, don't be offended that I'm not really impressed, because there are 10 "rappers" on my block, but this ain't that. There's a million "rappers" on Myspace and YouTube, but this ain't that...Before you paint a picture of me as some sort of hater, I have nothing to hate about. Google me. I'm all over. I don't think Speilberg would look at my iPhone camera recordings and call me a filmmaker. All I'm saying is if you truly love the artform help preserve it by playing your part whatever that may be. It's
ok to love something without feeling like you gotta try your hand at it. If you must, at least love it enough to respect it by doing it to the best of your ability. I appreciate every true rap artist and fan, this just food for thought. Big Dre K NO. 100

GREAT ADVICE FROM A GUY IN THE BUSINESS

» Dirty Bird 05/18/12 12:27:51  » I'M FORWARDING WHAT WAS SENT TO US » comments: 0

Dirty Bird Even Dr. Luke, a producer who is known for his attention to detail and his sophisticated grasp of music synthesis and sound design, emphasizes the importance of simplicity in pop music. With over 21 Billboard top 40 hits, Dr. Luke is one of the most successful writers and producers of all time. He is responsible for most of Ke$ha’s and Katy Perry’s hits, as well as a number of singles by Britney Spears, P!nk, and Kelly Clarkson. In an ABC Nightline feature, Luke says: “Sometimes the hardest thing, and the most difficult thing, is to do the most simple thing. I kind of feel that way about a good pop song too. When it’s right, it’s perfect.” A bit later in the video, we see him recording the main riff to Ke$ha’s #1 hit, “Tik Tok”, on a toy Yamaha keyboard. Even though he has millions of dollars worth of gear at his disposal, he chose to make a #1 track with a $20 keyboard. Again, you don’t need a $2,000 synthesizer to produce a hit; you just need to be creative.

All of these examples show that there’s no “right way” to produce pop music. The main thing these successful producers have in common is their ability to write songs that are simple, accessible, and infectiously catchy. Because most modern pop arrangements are created with virtual instruments, you can do 95% of the production in your bedroom. The only thing you might need a studio for is tracking vocals. Since you’ll only be recording a few vocal parts, you can get the session done in a few hours for less than $100. To make the song ready for the radio, you’ll probably also want to get the track professionally mixed and mastered. But again, you don’t need to spend a ton of money to make this happen.

So instead of getting hung up on what gear to use, focus on writing songs that are catchy, accessible, and creative. Next time you find yourself saying that you need better gear to be productive, just think: “If it’s good enough for Stargate, it’s good enough for me.” And remember, practice makes perfect; all of these producers worked hard to get to where they are today. Now, open up your DAW and start making those hits.
